- Nathan Thompson
Nathan was raised in Webster City, Iowa. Growing up, Nate and his family - Sue and Dave (Nathan's parents) and Kate (Nathan's sister) - spent countless hours on the golf course and Iowa State football and basketball games. Following high school graduation in 2002, Nate attended Iowa State University where we received his bachelor's degree in accounting. As an avid Iowa State Cyclone fan and Loyal Son through and through, it was a painful decision (to put it mildly!) for Nate and the Thompson family when he attended the University of Iowa to receive his master's in business administration and master's in healthcare administration. Nonetheless, he managed to exit Iowa City nearly unscathed and still a "loyal son forever true."
Following graduation from Iowa in 2009, Nate began his career at Alegant Health in Omaha, Nebraska; first as an Administrative Fellow and then as Innovation Business Manager. After two years in Omaha, Nate's friend and former Iowa classmate, Kent Lehr, recruited him to what was then Iowa Health System (now UnityPoint Health) as a Director of Network Development for the organization's Accountable Care Organization. This gave Nate the opportunity to get back to Iowa and to work within a growing healthcare organization. Most recently, Nate serves as the Director of Strategic Growth for UnityPoint Health.
Ashley Atherton
Ashley was born and raised in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Always a perpetual sporting event fan, she spent her early years as a cheerleader - both in high school and at the University of Northern Iowa. Ashley was interested in health care from an early age and became involved in Global Health Corps as a freshman at UNI, which led her to receive her bachelor's degree in health promotion and education. Following 21 years of living in Cedar Falls, Ashley dreamed of new experiences (and warmer climates!) and decided to move to Athens, Georgia in 2004 to pursue her master's in public health at the University of Georgia. Following graduation in 2006, Ashley spent a year working for the University System of Georgia in Atlanta, followed by a move to the Deep South for nearly five years where she managed an executive graduate health care administration program at The University of Southern Mississippi. In addition, through some of her professional mentors she worked as a health care consultant for rural and community hospitals throughout the country.
In late 2011, Ashley grew tired of being so far away from family and friends in the Midwest so she decided to move back to Iowa. Not long after, she scored a job in healthcare marketing and communications at what was then Iowa Health System (now UnityPoint Health.) Through great mentors and supporters throughout the organization, she quickly moved in to her most recent role as Director of Patient and Community Partner Engagement for the Fort Dodge region.
How we met...
We met through working at UnityPoint Health in Des Moines, Iowa. Throughout our first two years of working together we became fast friends. In 2013, Ashley made a move within the organization and began working in the Fort Dodge region. Thanks in part to Nate's mom, Sue Thompson (CEO of one of the UnityPoint Health regions) and countless other UnityPoint Health friends & co-workers who thought we would be perfect together, we finally went on a date. The rest is history!
