- In the Nysted Church there are 4 epitaphs: a painting of Dean (Provst) Knud Lerche and his wife, and one of the Notary (Slotsskriver) for ?lholm, Iver Nielsen with wife and children, both painted in 1663 probably by the same master, hanging on opposite walls facing each other.
The epitaph for Iver Nielsen, his wife, and 7 children states:
"Anno 1663 in Martij hafver Ifuer Nielsen, barnf?ed udi Steffeldt paa Hadersleff udi 1615, fordum H?yloflig Uhukommelse Fyrstelige Naade Printzens Ki?kken-skriver, siden Slotsskriver paa Aalholm og Raadman i Nysted, med sin kiere Hustru Johanne Knuds Daatter Lerche f?ed i Nysted 1631 ladet denne Tafle bekoste och opsette Guds Huus til Beprydelse, Dennem, Deres B?rn og Venner til en christelig Amindelse."
The above translated to English:
"In the year 1663 in March had Iver Nielsen, born in Stevelt in Haderslev in 1615, formerly the Highly-Noble Princely Gracious Prince's Kitchen-Clerk, later Notary for Aalholm and Alderman in Nysted, with his beloved wife Johanne Knudsdatter Lerche, born in Nysted in 1631, paid for this plaque and set up in God's House to ornament it, them, their children and friends as a Christian declaration."

In the middle of next century (the 1650s), we have the Swedish War, of which Lolland had its major part. After the daring march over ice-covered straights Carl Gustav landed, as you know, near Nakskov and led his army through Lolland to Falster. Nysted had probably been a little out of the way for the army, but the Swedish corps arrived anyway. It is reported that they pressed upon Aalholm to force the castle's notary Iver Nielsen, who was considered to be a rich man, to hand over his money. However his brave wife, Johanne Lerche, daughter of the parish priest in Nysted, came with a red-hot poker with which she defended her husband so formidably that the enemy took flight.
