- In the Nysted Church there are 4 epitaphs: a painting of Dean (Provst) Knud Lerche and his wife, and one of the Notary (Slotsskriver) for ?lholm, Iver Nielsen with wife and children, both painted in 1663 probably by the same master, hanging on opposite walls facing each other. On the left, on the north choir wall, hanging the imagine of Magister Knud Madsen Lerche.
Knud Madsen Lerche was born in Nyborg in 1593 and belonged to a prestigious and wealthy family. In his youth he traveled abroad: in 1616 he studied in Wittenberg, and was thereafter the Rector in Landskrona, which at that time belonged to Denmark, in 1618 he was appointed as the Priest for Nysted, and in 1623 he was made the Dean of Musse district. Knud Lerche was married to Sophia Antoniusdatter Bathe, who stands by his side at the painting. She was born in Nyk?bing in 1600, the daughter of Dowager Queen Sophie's "Hofmedikus" (Court Physician) Anton Bathe. He enjoyed great prestige and attended as deputy for Lolland-Falster's clergy during the negotiations over sovereignty introduction of 1660. He died in 1666, there were nine children and his son Oluf Lerche, who had been chaplain under his father, became his successor in office as clergyman for Nysted.
The epitaph for Knud Lerche and his wife states:
"Ao. 1663 hafver M. Knud Lerche Provist og Sogne-Pr?st i Nyested i hans Alders 70 Aar ladet denne Tafle bekoste, og efter sin sl. Hustrues Sophia Bathe d?delig Afgang ops?atte i Kirken til Beprydelse, Deres B?rn og Venner til Ihukommelse. Gud samle vi alle i det ?vige Lif. Aman."
The above translated to English:

Under the painting is hung a brass plate, which in 1744 was found in his grave in the choir, and which reads:
"Her hviler den H?derlige og H?yl?rde Mand Sl. M. Knud Lerche, f?ed i Nyborg 8 Februari 1593, kaldet til Sogne-Pr?st i Nysted Dom. 12 Trinit., som var d. 23 August 1618. Blef Proust 15 Maii 1623.
