The Ballarat District, page 196:
Michelson, A.K., Ballarat, is a native of Nexoe, Copenhagen, Denmark, who was born in 1836, and who prior to his coming to Victoria in 1857 had served seven years before the mast, but who came to Melbourne as a passenger. His first mining experience was at Beechworth, where he spent a year, after which he followed the rushes to Benalla, Talbot, and Maryborough. At the last named place he and a party of four others were the first to commence quartz-mining, which they carried on fifteen
years, paying for a time ?1 per ton for crushing. In 1876 Mr Michelson built a hotel on Chinaman's Flat and kept it five years, and was proprietor of the McIvor Hotel, at Maryborough, and the Carisbrook Hotel, Carisbrook, respectively for over a year. After that he removed to Ballarat, where he has since been proprietor of the Southern Cross Hotel, Sturt-street west. He purchased
the property about three years ago, and has since built additions, which render it a first-classhotel for travellers. It has among other improvements a fine billiard-room with two tables.
Their inclusion in this volume was to record their contribution in the building of the State of Victoria, Australia.
